From Penang with love

Over the years, regulars to White Rose Cafe’s Penang hawkers’ fare will know that once the school holidays hit the calendar, it’s time for their seasonal pilgrimage to York Hotel to indulge in their favourite Penang street food.

The appetising bowl of Penang laksa with its thick rice noodles steeped in a tangy tamarind fish-based broth is a favourite with many diners.

This season, joining the usual line-up of Penang laksa, oyster omelette, prawn mee, rojak, chendol and six other well-loved Penang staples served à la minute by the hawkers is the kiam chye th’ng, which is a savoury soup cooked with salted mustard green, pork belly, innards, minced pork, tomato, ginger and bean curd. A cherished favourite among Penangites, this soup is paired with fragrant yam rice speckled with dried shrimps to give lovely bursts of umami.

Popularly known as orh-jian, the oyster omeltte is is a wok-fragrant combination of rice flour batter, eggs and a generous portion of oysters.
